ORONOCO, Minn. — Major improvements at Lake Zumbro Park are set to begin Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2025, as contractors start construction on the parking lot and boat launch area. Rochester Public Utilities will gradually lower the lake by six feet over two weeks to accommodate the work.

Once the water reaches a level too low for safe boating, the boat launch will temporarily close, but one lane will reopen when conditions allow. The launch will remain accessible until the lake begins to freeze later this year.

“We’re excited to begin these long-awaited improvements at Lake Zumbro Park,” said Olmsted County Parks and Trails Director Karlin Ziegler. “These upgrades will enhance safety, accessibility, and the overall experience for everyone who enjoys the lake. We look forward to unveiling the finished project next spring.”

The construction plan includes a new boat launch and upgraded parking area, with completion expected before Memorial Day on May 25, 2026. Officials note that local traffic should not be affected during the construction period.

Public Engagement: Open House Scheduled

The Olmsted County Parks and Trails Department is inviting residents to an open house on Thursday, Oct. 23, 2025, from 6 to 8 p.m. at The Pondy Restaurant and Bar, located at 40240 Wabasha County Road 90 in Mazeppa.

The open house will showcase design concepts for the park’s shelter and fishing pier area. Staff will gather community feedback to help shape the park’s future recreational offerings, ensuring the upgrades reflect local priorities.

Project Benefits

Once completed, the improvements are expected to:

  • Increase safety for visitors and boaters
  • Improve accessibility for people of all abilities
  • Enhance the overall recreational experience
  • Provide a modernized boat launch and parking area ready for summer 2026

Residents and visitors are encouraged to plan visits around temporary closures and attend the open house to provide input. With careful planning and phased construction, Lake Zumbro Park aims to deliver long-term benefits to the community while maintaining access for the 2025 boating season as much as possible.
