A major structural milestone at Washington's Western State Hospital is moving the new forensic hospital into the next phase of construction. Crutcher Structures has completed the final major structural concrete pour on the 467,000-square-foot facility in Lakewood.

The milestone substantially completes the building's primary structural concrete work. Crutcher Structures is continuing related concrete activities this fall as the project advances toward subsequent construction phases.

Structural Concrete Work Nears Completion

Crutcher Structures is delivering the major concrete package in partnership with Clark Construction. With the final major pour complete, crews will shift toward slab-on-metal-deck placement and topping slabs.

The remaining work also includes dismantling the project's final two tower cranes. Those activities will mark a transition away from major structural concrete operations as construction progresses on the facility.

The project includes two major components: the 467,000-square-foot forensic hospital and a 53,000-square-foot administration building constructed using mass timber.

Forensic Hospital Construction Program

The new hospital is being developed for the Washington State Department of Social and Health Services as part of the state's forensic behavioral health infrastructure.

The scale of the facility and its specialized use require coordination across structural, architectural, building systems and institutional construction activities. The completion of the major structural concrete phase establishes a key foundation for continued work on the facility's interior and building systems.

The associated administration building adds a separate mass timber construction component to the overall development, creating a project that combines conventional structural concrete work with mass timber construction.
