WASHINGTON, Iowa — After months of anticipation and construction delays, downtown Washington is preparing to welcome a new addition to its square. Libations on Iowa, a bar and social gathering space founded by local entrepreneur Megan Libe, is now on track to open in mid-October.
Libe originally aimed for a July launch, but unforeseen construction challenges pushed the timeline back to September and eventually October. Still, her commitment hasn’t wavered.
“Everybody’s ready, I’m ready,” she said. “My contractors have told me they’ll be out by Oct. 1, then it’s up to me … my target date is the second week of October. I’m hoping to do a soft opening with family and friends, and then open up after that.”
Libe is no stranger to the hospitality scene. She currently runs The Tipsy Traveler, an alcohol catering service that has made her a familiar name in the local bartending community. Now, with Libations on Iowa, she’s planting permanent roots on Iowa Avenue.
“I love downtown Washington, I shop down here, I eat down here,” she said. “I really have always wanted to be a part of downtown, as a business owner, to provide for the community. So when this fell into my lap, I just jumped on it.”
The new bar will feature 16 drinks on tap, alongside a wide selection of cocktails, spirits, and non-alcoholic beverages. A compact, open kitchen will serve “small bites,” including flatbreads and appetizers that pair with the drink menu.
Her vision for the establishment is not the typical late-night bar scene. Instead, Libe plans for Libations on Iowa to be a community hub, offering events such as bingo nights and trivia contests.
“I think Washington needs something different, with more social interaction,” she said. “I would like more of something where people can get together even if they don’t know anybody, people can make friends.”
Inside the space, construction crews have been working on finishing touches, including assembling the bar area. The final stages are now underway, and Libe said seeing her plans materialize has been gratifying.
“It is 100% my vision, from the first day that I met with the building owner,” she said. “My dream vision is turning into reality.”
Local business leaders see Libations on Iowa as another step toward revitalizing the city’s square. By adding a fresh gathering spot, the venue is expected to attract both longtime residents and newcomers, contributing to downtown’s ongoing growth.
With a staff, menu, and vision already in place, Libe is confident the October opening will mark the beginning of something special for Washington’s community and nightlife.
“Come hell or high water,” she said, “Libations On Iowa would open its doors by the end of October.”
