Lowe’s is testing drone delivery for home improvement supplies in the Charlotte, North Carolina, market, adding a new fulfillment option designed to help customers receive small, last-minute project essentials without making another trip to a store. The pilot launched September 24 at the retailer’s Matthews location.
The pilot focuses on a curated selection of products that customers may need during home improvement projects, including hand tools, paint products and household essentials such as soap, tape, all-purpose cleaner and batteries.
Eligible customers can access the service through DoorDash, where a dedicated Lowe’s by Drone storefront displays available products. Delivery eligibility is determined by the customer’s address in relation to the participating Matthews store.
Wing drones currently carry orders weighing approximately 2.5 pounds per flight. Lowe’s said eligible orders can reach customers in as fast as 20 minutes, providing an alternative for small purchases that might otherwise require a store visit.
The drone program expands Lowe’s existing same-day fulfillment options, which include buy online, pickup in store, curbside pickup and same-day delivery. The pilot builds on Wing and DoorDash’s established drone delivery operations in the Charlotte area.
The initiative is also part of Lowe’s broader technology strategy. The retailer has introduced Mylow, an AI assistant for customers, and Mylow Companion, an AI-powered tool for store associates. According to Lowe’s, the two systems have answered more than 25 million questions since launching in 2025.
Drone delivery could provide another way for home improvement retailers to support customers who need lightweight materials and supplies during active projects. For DIY customers and construction professionals, faster access to frequently needed items may help reduce delays associated with forgotten or replacement supplies.
The Matthews pilot will provide Lowe’s with an opportunity to test drone-based fulfillment within an established retail and delivery network while evaluating how the service fits into its broader customer and logistics operations.
