A major bridge replacement program on Cape Cod is moving into its next phase as Massachusetts officials unveiled updated design renderings for the future Sagamore Bridge. The project provides construction owners, contractors and infrastructure stakeholders with a clearer view of the planned improvements ahead of construction, which is scheduled to begin in 2028.

Design Features for the New Crossing

The replacement Sagamore Bridge is designed to improve safety, mobility and multimodal access across the Cape Cod Canal.

Updated renderings show two separate bridge spans, each carrying traffic in one direction, replacing the existing structure. The design also includes a barrier-separated shared-use path for pedestrians and bicyclists, enhanced roadway connections, improved lighting and architectural elements intended to complement the surrounding region.

Bridge foundations are also being designed to better accommodate marine traffic using the Cape Cod Canal.

Construction Schedule and Traffic Operations

The Sagamore and Bourne bridges are both more than 90 years old and serve as key transportation links for residents, businesses, emergency responders and visitors, accommodating more than 38 million trips each year.

According to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, construction is expected to begin in spring 2028 following a notice to proceed in late 2027. Traffic is expected to transition to the new bridge by 2033, while overall project completion is planned for 2036.

To minimize disruptions, two travel lanes in each direction are expected to remain open until the first replacement bridge span is completed. State transportation officials also plan to use traffic monitoring systems, coordinate with local agencies and emergency responders, and limit construction impacts during peak travel periods.
