Massachusetts officials are preparing to break ground in 2026 on a new, state-of-the-art forensic laboratory in Marlborough that will significantly expand the Commonwealth’s ability to process and analyze criminal evidence.

The planned facility will consolidate the Massachusetts State Police’s existing crime laboratories in Maynard and Sudbury into a single, modern campus designed to support advanced forensic science, improve efficiency, and meet national accreditation standards. Construction is expected to begin early next year, with the building potentially opening in the first months of 2028.

State officials said the four-story laboratory will be constructed on a currently vacant parcel at 100 Martinangelo Drive and will incorporate sustainable environmental design features. Once operational, the facility is expected to employ more than 250 people and serve as a central hub for forensic analysis across Massachusetts.

“Our crime lab professionals play a vital role in investigations across Massachusetts,” State Police Superintendent Col. Geoff Noble said. “This new cutting-edge crime lab will enhance our ability to uphold national standards of forensic excellence, support law enforcement statewide, and provide justice for victims and families.”

The Massachusetts State Police Crime Laboratory system currently operates nine locations statewide, providing forensic services in areas including DNA analysis, drug chemistry, firearms examination, and toxicology. Officials said bringing multiple operations under one roof will improve collaboration, streamline workflows, and enhance turnaround times for evidence processing.

Former Secretary of Public Safety and Security Terrence Reidy said the project reflects the state’s long-term investment in public safety infrastructure and scientific innovation.

“Massachusetts is a national leader in forensic science. Beyond the critical infrastructure, this project represents our continued commitment to scientific excellence, justice and public safety innovation,” Reidy said. “This purpose-built facility has been made possible by the strong collaboration between State Police, DCAMM and Greatland Realty Partners.”

The Marlborough site was selected for its proximity to major highways and its potential to support local job creation and economic development. State officials said the location will allow efficient statewide access while positioning the facility to support future growth in forensic capabilities.

Rather than pursuing traditional public construction, the state will lease the building from developer Greatland Realty Partners under a 20-year agreement, with options to extend for two additional 10-year terms. Officials said the lease arrangement will allow the crime lab to open several years sooner than a conventional state-funded build.

The project was announced by the Healey-Driscoll administration in partnership with the Massachusetts State Police and the Division of Capital Asset Management and Maintenance. Officials said additional details on construction milestones and operational planning will be released as the project advances.

Once completed, the Marlborough crime lab is expected to play a central role in strengthening forensic services statewide, supporting criminal investigations, and ensuring timely access to justice for communities across Massachusetts.
