The construction industry’s need for qualified mechanical workers continues to make early-career recruiting an important priority for contractors. MCAA is using its 2026 GreatFutures Forum to connect students with mechanical industry employers while providing education and professional development opportunities.
The three-day forum is scheduled for Sept. 24-26 in St. Louis, Missouri, with students representing more than 30 chapters. The program combines technical and professional education with opportunities for students to pursue internships and full-time positions after graduation.
The main recruiting event is scheduled for the morning of Sept. 25. Employers and students will participate in a breakfast-based networking session rather than a traditional booth-style career fair. Employers will also have access to a separate room for optional on-site interviews with prospective candidates.
MCAA has established a color-coded system to help identify hiring needs. Green indicates employers seeking full-time workers, while yellow identifies employers recruiting interns. Purple indicates participants who are attending to help facilitate connections rather than recruit.
Recruiting is one component of a broader program covering communication, service operations, mechanical systems and professional development.
The Thursday schedule includes sessions on written communication, internal communication and workplace etiquette. Friday programming includes discussions on service agreements, a mechanical systems session and a tour of Murphy Company. Saturday programming will focus on student chapter activities, peer networking and a student competition.
The forum also includes an alumni breakfast and opportunities for participants to continue networking beyond the scheduled job fair.
For mechanical contractors, programs that connect students with employers can support workforce development before candidates enter the full-time labor market. Internship and entry-level recruiting also give contractors an opportunity to establish relationships with students before graduation.
The GreatFutures Forum places recruiting alongside technical education and industry networking, creating a single event where mechanical contractors can identify potential hires while students gain exposure to career opportunities.
