Construction companies continue to face the need for stronger frontline leadership as foremen take on responsibilities spanning crew management, planning, documentation and safety. The Mechanical Contractors Association of America (MCAA) is preparing an online training program intended to help new and aspiring field leaders build those capabilities.

Eight-Week Leadership Training

MCAA’s Foundations of Field Leadership program starts Sept. 24 and runs for eight weeks. Participants meet online once a week for 90 minutes with an experienced field leader.

The curriculum addresses practical responsibilities associated with managing field operations, including work planning, crew leadership, documentation and safety. The sessions include live interaction between instructors and students, along with quizzes and short video assignments.

The program is designed for new and prospective field leaders who need additional preparation for managing work and crews.

Registration and Workforce Development

Registration for the program closes Sept. 10. MCAA members are not limited in the number of employees they can enroll, although available spaces are filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

For mechanical contractors, structured field-leadership training can provide an avenue for developing employees as they move into supervisory responsibilities. The program's emphasis on planning, documentation and safety also addresses several routine functions that directly affect field execution.

Why It Matters

Developing qualified foremen and other frontline supervisors is an important component of workforce development for mechanical contractors. Training that combines technical field experience with leadership and operational practices can help contractors prepare employees for expanded responsibilities.

MCAA’s online format also allows member companies to provide leadership training without requiring participants to travel to a central training location.
