The construction industry continues to face workforce and leadership development challenges, making dedicated training infrastructure increasingly important for large contractors. McCarthy Building Companies has broken ground on a new 12-acre campus in Tempe that will combine employee training, leadership development, lodging and conference functions in one location.
The McCarthy Anchor Campus, located at 2100 S. Priest Drive, is expected to open in early 2028. The facility is intended to serve employees across McCarthy's U.S. operations and provide a centralized setting for technical instruction, professional development and collaboration.
The redevelopment will transform an existing campus while retaining its Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired architectural character. Planned improvements include flexible classrooms, breakout areas, lodging accommodations, wellness facilities and adaptable outdoor spaces.
SmithGroup is providing architectural services for the redevelopment. The design is intended to accommodate multiple learning and collaboration formats, allowing McCarthy to bring employees from different locations and job functions together for training.
The project follows McCarthy's January purchase of the property and expands the contractor's existing workforce development infrastructure in Arizona.
The Tempe campus will complement McCarthy's Innovation and Craft Workforce Center in Chandler. While the Chandler facility focuses on hands-on skills training for craft professionals and trade partners, the Tempe location is being developed as a broader learning center for both salaried and craft personnel.
The campus is expected to support customized employee development programs that combine classroom instruction, digital learning and hands-on training. The approach is designed to strengthen technical capabilities and leadership skills across McCarthy's workforce.
Pyramid Global Hospitality will operate the campus and oversee guest services through its PyramidWorks division. The arrangement adds hospitality and conference-management capabilities to the training environment, including lodging and facilities intended for extended employee programs.
For construction owners and contractors, the project highlights the growing role of structured workforce development as companies address changing project requirements and the need for skilled employees in both field and management positions.
McCarthy has more than 8,000 salaried employees and craft professionals nationwide. The new Tempe campus gives the organization a centralized facility for training, onboarding, leadership development and cross-office collaboration.
The project also expands the physical infrastructure supporting McCarthy's employee development strategy, linking a national learning campus with specialized craft training capabilities in Arizona.
