Construction firms continue investing in workforce development as demand for skilled professionals remains a priority across the industry. McCarthy Building Companies has highlighted six students who returned for a fourth summer in its internship program, reflecting the company's continued focus on developing future construction talent through long-term field experience.
McCarthy's 2026 internship class includes 341 participants, with six students completing a fourth consecutive summer through the company's Intern Advantage program.
The returning interns have supported projects spanning renewable energy, data centers, healthcare, education, hospitality and entertainment, giving them exposure to multiple construction sectors and project delivery environments.
Throughout their internships, participants have worked in roles that include project engineering, preconstruction, estimating and field operations. Several also gained hands-on experience alongside craft professionals, supporting activities such as material coordination, underground utility work, construction planning and project execution.
According to McCarthy, interns have been assigned increasing levels of responsibility during successive summers, including managing project scopes, coordinating construction activities, supporting digital field operations and participating in preconstruction planning.
The program also exposes students to active healthcare facilities, renewable energy developments, wastewater infrastructure and mission critical projects, allowing them to explore different career paths before entering the workforce full time.
In addition to project assignments, participants have contributed to safety initiatives, community outreach efforts and professional development events.
Construction employers continue expanding internship and apprenticeship programs to strengthen the industry's future workforce. Multi-year internship programs provide owners and contractors with an opportunity to develop talent familiar with company operations, project delivery processes and field practices before graduation, helping address long-term workforce needs while building a pipeline of future project engineers, superintendents and construction managers.
