Michigan Breaks Ground on $152M Selfridge Air Base Runway Upgrade

Construction Owners Editorial Team

A $152 million runway reconstruction project at Selfridge Air National Guard Base has entered construction, advancing infrastructure upgrades needed to accommodate next-generation fighter and tanker aircraft. Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer joined federal, state and local officials for the groundbreaking, marking a major step in preparing the installation for future military operations.

The project will realign and expand the existing runway to support the arrival of F-15EX Eagle II fighter aircraft and KC-46 Pegasus tanker missions. The investment is part of a broader infrastructure programme intended to strengthen the base's military capabilities and long-term economic contribution to Michigan.

Highlights

  • $152 million allocated for runway realignment and expansion at Selfridge Air National Guard Base.
  • Improvements will prepare the base for F-15EX Eagle II fighters and KC-46 Pegasus tankers.
  • The Michigan National Guard's 127th Wing is transitioning from A-10 aircraft to F-15EX fighters.
  • A separate highway relocation project will support the base's future operational requirements.
  • Selfridge contributes an estimated $850 million annually to Michigan's economy and supports 30,000 jobs statewide.

Runway Expansion Prepares Base for New Aircraft

The runway project will upgrade critical airfield infrastructure to accommodate the operational requirements of the F-15EX Eagle II and KC-46 Pegasus. The Michigan National Guard's 127th Wing is preparing to transition from the A-10 Thunderbolt II to the F-15EX, while the base is also preparing to replace its KC-135 Stratotanker mission with the KC-46 Pegasus.

The F-15EX fighter mission was announced in April 2025, following the earlier selection of Selfridge for the KC-46A tanker mission in January 2024.

The runway investment is intended to ensure the installation can support the aircraft and associated military operations over the long term.

Highway Relocation Forms Part of Wider Infrastructure Programme

The runway improvements are part of a broader construction effort that includes relocating and rebuilding a section of William P. Rosso Highway between Interstate 94 and Jefferson Avenue.

The highway project involves roadway realignment, drainage improvements and related modifications to accommodate Selfridge's future mission requirements. Together, the two projects reflect coordination among Michigan, Macomb County and military partners to upgrade infrastructure surrounding the base.

Investment Supports Michigan's Defense Economy

Selfridge is a significant contributor to Michigan's defence and aerospace sector. The installation generates an estimated $850 million in economic activity annually and supports approximately 30,000 jobs statewide. It is home to more than 5,000 members of the Air and Army National Guard and Reserve components, alongside units from multiple U.S. military services and federal agencies.

Michigan's wider defence industry contributes approximately $30 billion to the state economy and supports around 166,000 jobs.

Military Infrastructure Investment Strengthens Regional Readiness

The runway and highway projects will support Selfridge's transition to new aircraft missions while strengthening the installation's role in national defence. The work also represents a substantial investment in military infrastructure, regional employment and Michigan's broader defence manufacturing ecosystem.
