Starting next year, Michigan will roll out speed enforcement cameras in construction zones across state highways, making it the 18th state to implement such measures. This initiative has proven successful in other states, with Maryland, for instance, witnessing an 85% reduction in speeders in construction zones over the last decade.
Lance Binoniemi, Vice President of the Michigan Infrastructure and Transportation Association, explained that the legislation, which has been in the works for five years, is aimed at changing driver behavior. “This legislation is not intended to be really to go after people and just to fine people; this legislation is intended to change driver behavior. In the states that they've utilized this, we would now be the 18th state,” said Binoniemi.
In 2023, Michigan State Police reported over 8,000 accidents in construction zones, resulting in 24 fatalities. Binoniemi emphasized the importance of addressing this issue for the safety of workers and drivers.
In a statement, the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) expressed support for the cameras: “MDOT appreciates and supports any new endeavor to increase safety on our roadways, especially within work zones. This has proven to be effective in other states and we are looking forward to increased safety for our road workers and motorists."
Drivers caught speeding in construction zones will not receive points on their licenses. However, fines will apply—$150 for a first offense and $300 for a second offense. The installation of cameras will be carried out by a third party, and drivers may not see them on the roads immediately.
Binoniemi added, “We know distracted driving has a major cause of these accidents and fatalities within work zones. I think if a driver is aware of a camera that is detecting their speed, they will become aware of many more things that are going on within that work zone.”
