Michigan’s second tallest skyscraper reaches construction milestone

MLive

DETROIT - It is now as tall as it’s going to get. Michigan’s second tallest skyscraper has reached a construction milestone as the final steel beam has been lifted into place, 681 feet up.

The Hudson Site, located at Woodward and Grand River right in the heart of downtown Detroit, is the largest ground-up development in the last 50 years in Detroit. According to Bedrock Detroit, more than 3,500 tradespeople have been involved in its construction, putting in more than 2.7 million hours of recorded labor.

“The talent and dedication of Detroit’s tradespeople has been a driving force on the Hudson’s Site and integral to achieving this landmark project,” said Dan Gilbert, Founder & Chairman of Bedrock. “We are proud of their individual contributions, that will make this a generational development and will surely enhance the city’s skyline for Detroiters and visitors for decades to come.”

Now that the topping off milestone is complete, the next phase of construction will see crews installing the remaining elements of the glass façade.

When it’s all said and done, the Hudson development will introduce more than 1.5 million square feet of new retail, office, dining, hospitality, residential and event amenities to the 1200 Woodward Avenue block of downtown Detroit.

The upper floors of the tower will be home to close to 100 residential units, providing some of the best views of the city. The 5-star hotel will feature more than 200 luxury rooms. There will also be an outdoor plaza and indoor gallery with public art and exhibitions and year-round programming.

The Hudson project will be the second tallest building in Michigan after the Renaissance Center, which is 727 feet. Construction is expected to be completed sometime this year.
