
Mike Mooney, Bruce E. Grewcock Distinguished Chair Professor of Underground Construction & Tunneling at Colorado School of Mines, has been inducted into the National Academy of Construction.
The National Academy of Construction honor is reserved for individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the construction industry. Mooney was recognized for “his significant contributions to tunnel and earthwork construction technology, process improvement, and recognized leadership in underground construction research, education and outreach.”
Since joining the Mines faculty in 2003, Mooney has served as the founding director of the Center for Underground and director of the Underground Construction & Tunnel Engineering graduate degree program. His work centers on the planning, design, construction, monitoring, and rehabilitation of tunnels and underground infrastructure, spanning transportation, energy, and utilities. Beyond academia, he offers technical expertise to project stakeholders and serves on expert panels and as an expert witness in project-related claims and litigation.
Mooney’s academic credentials include a PhD in civil engineering from Northwestern University, an MS in civil engineering from the University of California, Irvine, a BS in civil engineering from Washington University in St. Louis, and a BA in physics from Hastings College.
The National Academy of Construction, comprising around 500 industry leaders, acknowledges the distinguished contributions of its members to the field. It also offers its leadership and expertise to organizations across the industry, fostering collaboration, innovation, and the development of future leaders.
