
A $69.6 million workforce development facility in Monroe County, New York, has reached completion, expanding hands-on training capacity for advanced manufacturing, optics, skilled trades and emerging energy technologies. The new Sydor Optics Advanced Technology Center at Monroe Community College is designed to connect technical education with growing workforce needs across the region.
The project moves several technology-focused programs from an outdated facility on West Henrietta Road to Monroe Community College’s main campus in Brighton. The new center also provides expanded space for the college’s Optical Systems Technology program and connects the training programs with the campus’s science, technology, engineering and mathematics resources.
The Advanced Technology Center provides space for training in automotive technology, precision tooling, HVAC service and mechanical trades. A new solar laboratory adds capacity for instruction in solar photovoltaic installation, solar energy installation management and solar service technology.
The facility is intended to support workforce preparation for industries requiring specialized technical skills, including optics and advanced manufacturing. Monroe Community College’s Optical Systems Technology program has experienced substantial enrollment growth since 2015, increasing by more than 3,500 percent.
The expanded facility gives the program additional space and places it alongside related STEM programs on the Brighton campus.
The total project investment is $69.6 million. New York State provided $34.6 million in support, including $10 million previously allocated for the center’s STEM addition.
Monroe County contributed another $34.8 million, including $3.5 million secured through federal support from U.S. Sens. Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand and U.S. Rep. Joe Morelle.
The investment supports regional efforts to strengthen workforce infrastructure for New York’s semiconductor and advanced technology sectors.
The completed center expands Monroe Community College’s ability to provide practical training for high-demand technical occupations. Its combination of technology programs, STEM education and specialized laboratory space creates a centralized training environment for students preparing to enter advanced manufacturing and energy-related careers.
