Domestic production of rare earth magnet components is moving into commercial applications as MP Materials begins supplying General Motors with magnets manufactured in Fort Worth. The milestone demonstrates the operating capacity of a North Texas facility that integrates multiple stages of rare earth metal and magnet production.
The magnets are being evaluated for use in GM electric vehicles, while MP Materials continues expanding its manufacturing footprint in the region.
MP Materials operates a 250,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in Fort Worth's AllianceTexas development. The plant produces metal, alloy and rare earth magnets within the same manufacturing operation.
The facility has delivered its first magnets to General Motors, with prototype components undergoing testing in Michigan for potential use in models including the Chevrolet Equinox EV, GMC Sierra EV and Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport X.
The Fort Worth magnet division employs approximately 350 people. The facility's integrated production process supports the conversion of rare earth materials into finished magnet components for automotive applications.
MP Materials is expanding its North Texas operations with construction of a second manufacturing facility in Northlake. The $1.25 billion project occupies approximately 120 acres and is planned to create more than 1,500 jobs.
The facility, known as 10X, is expected to significantly increase production capacity compared with the existing Fort Worth operation.
The Northlake development adds another large-scale advanced manufacturing project to the AllianceTexas area and expands the region's role in domestic rare earth processing and magnet production.
MP Materials' first magnet deliveries to General Motors mark a transition from facility development to production for an advanced manufacturing operation in North Texas. The Fort Worth and Northlake projects also demonstrate the construction requirements associated with expanding domestic critical-material supply chains, including large industrial facilities, specialized production infrastructure and supporting site development
