EAST LANSING, Mich. — As students returned to Michigan State University this fall, they were met with more than just a new academic year. Across campus, cranes, construction fencing, and work crews highlight a sweeping series of capital projects that will reshape MSU for years to come.

From upgraded athletic facilities to next-generation research greenhouses, the projects reflect a push by MSU’s Board of Trustees to modernize aging infrastructure, expand academic programs, and strengthen student life.
“Something that students won’t likely notice is the infrastructure work that was done to dig large trenches to install and connect new drinking water, chilled water, electrical and network lines through campus,” said Erica Venton, spokesperson for MSU Infrastructure Planning and Facilities. “You’re seeing some of that work at the corner of Red Cedar Road and Shaw Lane now. However, there was a section of Trowbridge Road between Farm Lane and Red Cedar Road, for example, that was completely torn up. Now it looks like we just planted some fresh grass and installed a cute fence.”
Spartan Stadium Renovations
One of the most visible upgrades is happening at Spartan Stadium, where the Board of Trustees approved major renovations in December 2024. Videoboards and signage featuring the Spartan helmet have been replaced after more than a decade of use, while premium suites and club areas in the West Tower’s 4th, 7th, and 8th floors are undergoing their first major updates since 2004.
The upgrades will modernize hospitality spaces for events, donors, and dignitaries while also bringing ADA-compliant restrooms, updated seating, flooring, and concessions. Demolition for the targeted floors has been completed, and as of June, framing, drywall, and electrical/mechanical rough-ins are underway.

In April 2025, the project scope was expanded to improve climate controls on the 7th and 8th floors, adding hot water isolation valves and better access for maintenance.
Farm Lane Road and Utility Reconstruction – $22M
In February 2025, MSU approved a $22 million overhaul of Farm Lane, reconstructing the roadway from Wilson Road to North Shaw Lane. The project includes bike lanes, new traffic signals, and improved stormwater and sewer infrastructure.
The work also ensures utilities are built to last: a secondary steam pipeline above the 100-year flood plain will connect to the new Plant and Environmental Sciences Building, while electrical ducts will support MSU’s future energy demand. An aged water main is being replaced, and new communication ducts will expand digital capacity across campus.
Spartan Gateway District – $150M
One of the most ambitious undertakings is the $150 million Spartan Gateway District, approved in April. The project will transform 14 acres at South Harrison Road and Trowbridge Road into a mixed-use hub that could include:
- A hotel and retail/restaurant space
- Market-rate housing
- Office space and parking
- A 6,000-seat Olympic sports arena
- Potential academic and healthcare facilities
This project is still in early phases, with a completion timeline yet to be announced.
