Morehead State University leaders recently went behind the scenes for an in-depth look at the progress taking shape across several major campus construction sites—an important milestone in the University’s broader plan to modernize its academic and residential facilities. The walkthrough marks a moment of momentum for MSU as it advances its long-term infrastructure vision.

Associate Vice President for Construction Kim Oatman led the tour, guiding University leadership through active work zones and future development areas outlined in the newly approved Campus Facility Master Plan. Endorsed by the Board of Regents in October, the plan serves as a multi-year blueprint for revitalizing MSU’s grounds, buildings, and student spaces.
The private tour brought leaders to several transformational project sites, including ongoing work at Prefontaine Hall and preparations for a second residence hall intended to accommodate future enrollment growth. Participants also visited the emerging site of the new Science & Engineering Building, a major academic investment that will bolster STEM research and teaching capacity. In addition, the group discussed designs for the Multidisciplinary Academic Building, a project aimed at strengthening collaboration across departments and improving access to modern learning environments.
“These projects represent a generational leap for our facilities,” said MSU President Dr. Jay Morgan. “They will enhance both student living and learning experiences.”

The academic building initiatives are supported through capital investments provided by the Kentucky General Assembly in the 2022–24 biennial state budget, underscoring broad support for MSU’s advancement of research and student success spaces.
Oatman highlighted the University’s ongoing commitment to openness as construction moves forward, stating, “The master plan reflects our commitment to transparency and collaboration. We’ll continue sharing updates as funding and planning progress.”
Beyond the projects currently underway, many future initiatives in the master plan depend on continued funding availability. Even so, leadership emphasized that the progress already visible—paired with the Regents’ approval of the plan—demonstrates MSU’s dedication to creating a vibrant, student-centered environment for years to come.
The tour underscored how the University is simultaneously enhancing residence life, expanding academic capabilities, and preparing facilities that support MSU’s strategic goals of growth, recruitment, and comprehensive student engagement.
