RENO, Nev. — Nevada regulators have stepped up efforts to protect homeowners from unlicensed contracting and illegal construction operations across the state. The Nevada State Contractors Board (NSCB) recently joined a national enforcement initiative to identify violators and prevent consumers from being exploited.

The crackdown — coordinated with the National Association of State Contractors Licensing Agencies — took place Oct. 13 through Oct. 25 and involved undercover operations and surprise inspections targeting individuals performing work without required credentials.
According to the Board, six unlicensed contractors were caught unlawfully bidding on jobs requiring a license, with estimates ranging from $2,500 to $16,000 for painting only three rooms. Those cases have now advanced to criminal investigations.
Across the two-week effort, enforcement teams carried out:
“Undercover operations are an important part of the Board’s investigative strategies because it allows us to experience first-hand what consumers face when dealing with unlicensed contractors,” explained Executive Officer David Behar. “We are pleased to see the same initiatives taking place across the country as we unite to send a clear message that adherence to the construction laws of our respective states are taken seriously and serve to safeguard the public from becoming financially harmed when engaging in construction projects.”

The NSCB emphasizes that hiring licensed professionals protects customers from:
✅ Unsafe or improper construction
✅ Fraud or unfinished work
✅ Lack of insurance coverage for injuries or damages
✅ Financial losses with no legal recourse
Unlicensed contractors often advertise at prices that seem competitive — but can leave homeowners responsible for costly repairs or legal trouble if something goes wrong.

Nevada’s participation shows increased collaboration nationwide to monitor construction activities — especially as home improvement demand remains high and more unlicensed operators attempt to undercut legitimate businesses.
The Board urges Nevadans to verify contractor credentials before signing agreements or paying deposits. Consumers can check licenses easily online through the NSCB website or report suspicious activity.
The agency will continue proactive enforcement work throughout the year, with more sting operations planned.
