New Grant Funds Construction Trade Courses in Central Illinois

Caroline Raffetto

The new $1.2 million grant from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity is set to significantly boost job training initiatives across Central Illinois, including funding for construction trade courses. Among the beneficiaries, Illinois Foundation of Skills USA-North Central, Girls Light Our Way (GLOW), and Next Level Academies Ministry each receive substantial portions of the grant to enhance their training programs.

GLOW, based in Pekin, will receive $325,000 to provide two construction trade courses aimed at empowering both girls and boys. Dr. Dawn Harris Jeffries, the founder of GLOW, emphasized the organization's mission to address economic inequality by equipping youth with vital educational and life skills. “At the end of the day, when we look at the outlooks of the years 2030, 2040, and 2050, I want to make sure they have all the skills that they need or desire to be prepared,” she said.

Starting May 21, the program will be available to applicants with a high school diploma or GED. Interested individuals must apply by May 20, and stipends will be provided to participants enrolled in the courses. This initiative aims to create more opportunities for youth to enter the construction industry, where there is an increasing demand for skilled labor.

Additionally, the Illinois Foundation of SkillsUSA-North Central will be allocated $550,000, while Next Level Academies Ministry will receive $325,000, further expanding access to workforce development opportunities in the region.

This initiative is part of a broader effort to combat economic disparities by providing local communities with access to education and vocational training that can lead to long-term, sustainable careers in the construction sector.
