
As contractors across the country continue to face labor shortages and growing demand for skilled workers, industry leaders are increasing efforts to introduce students and job seekers to careers in construction. In New Jersey, one of the state's largest workforce outreach events recently brought together thousands of participants to explore opportunities in the skilled trades.

Construction Industry Career Day (CICD) 2026 welcomed students, educators, job seekers and construction professionals to Edison for a two-day event focused on career awareness, workforce training and industry engagement. Organized by the Associated Construction Contractors of New Jersey (ACCNJ) and its industry partners, the event celebrated 25 years of workforce development efforts.
The event featured interactive demonstrations from union construction trades, allowing attendees to gain firsthand exposure to the skills used across the industry. Students participated in activities involving masonry, carpentry, scaffolding construction and other craft disciplines while learning about apprenticeship and training opportunities.
More than 2,000 students representing over 70 schools attended the event, while the first day focused on adults and job seekers interested in entering the construction workforce.
Educational institutions, trade associations and government agencies also participated, providing information on training programs, certifications and career pathways available throughout New Jersey.
A growing number of labor organizations and educational institutions are collaborating to create workforce pathways that combine classroom instruction with practical jobsite experience.
Several apprenticeship programs highlighted partnerships with colleges and universities that allow participants to earn academic credentials while pursuing careers in the trades. These initiatives reflect broader industry efforts to attract new talent and provide multiple routes into construction careers.
Attendees were also introduced to technologies increasingly used on modern jobsites, including drones, digital tools and advanced construction management systems that are becoming part of workforce training programs.
Construction workforce development has become a major focus for contractors, owners and industry organizations as infrastructure investment, manufacturing expansion and commercial development continue to drive labor demand.
