Michigan Road Construction Projects Begin June 30 Ahead of Holiday Weekend
LANSING, Mich. – As Michiganders gear up for the July 4 holiday, a new slate of road construction projects will begin across the state this week, according to the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT).
“Across Michigan, we are moving dirt and fixing the damn roads to grow our economy, helping Michiganders go to work, drop their kids off at school and run errands safely,” said Gov. Gretchen Whitmer in a news release.
“By the end of this construction season, we will have fixed, repaired or replaced nearly 24,500 lane miles of roads and 1,900 bridges, supporting thousands of good-paying, local jobs without raising taxes by a dime,” she added.

Projects Starting June 30
- Albion (Calhoun County): A $1.3 million project will repair 0.4 miles of I-94 Business Loop (BL) and M-99 (Superior Street) from Vine Street to Condit Road. Work includes bridge repairs over the North and South branches of the Kalamazoo River, resurfacing, concrete ramp and sidewalk upgrades, and pavement markings.
- Houghton County: A $270,000 project will replace a culvert on M-203 east of Salo Road (Bear Lake Road, Lakeshore Road), requiring a detour until the project ends on July 18.
- Delta County: North Deadhorse Road will close from July 1 to August 8 to replace two culverts over Deadhorse Creek.
- Presque Isle County: Starting July 7, a $1.1 million resurfacing project will improve 4.4 miles of M-65 from Grand Lake Highway to US-23. Work is expected to continue through August 14.
MDOT advises travelers to check their real-time traffic and construction website for current updates and detour maps as the holiday travel season begins.
These new projects are part of Michigan’s broader “Rebuilding Michigan” initiative, which is investing billions in long-overdue transportation upgrades without raising fuel taxes. Since Gov. Whitmer’s term began, the state has accelerated efforts to address critical infrastructure needs and make travel safer and more efficient.
MDOT has emphasized the importance of planning ahead for detours and construction zones, especially as traffic increases during the July 4 weekend. The agency encourages all drivers to remain patient and alert, particularly in active work zones where speed limits may be reduced.
