A long-awaited bridge rehabilitation project is officially underway in Oklahoma City, aimed at improving the condition of vital bridges along Interstate 40 and Interstate 44, especially for commuters traveling between west Oklahoma City and Canadian County. While the improvements are set to make future commutes smoother, there will be some temporary disruptions as work begins.
According to Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT) Director Tim Gatz, the bridges along these major highways are long overdue for updates. "The I-44, I-40 project is a rehabilitation on the bridge structures on I-40. And really, if you’ve been across those lately, bridge decks are in really bad condition," Gatz said.

The work, which began Monday, focuses on preliminary preparations under the bridges, including setting up lifts and securing the site for more extensive work in the coming years. While the current phase of construction may not immediately affect traffic significantly, drivers should be aware of ongoing preparations that will eventually lead to lane closures and other disruptions, particularly in the spring.
“It’s one of the old-style interchanges that worked really good when it was in the middle of a pasture, it’s not out in the middle of a pasture anymore," Gatz commented, emphasizing the outdated nature of the interchange and its inability to handle the current traffic volume. The project is expected to stretch into the early 2030s, but efforts are underway now to ensure the area is safe and ready for larger changes.
Long-Term Road Improvements Coming
This bridge project is part of a broader push to modernize Oklahoma’s aging infrastructure, ensuring it can better accommodate increasing traffic and improve safety for drivers. ODOT is currently in the design phase of a comprehensive interchange reconstruction project that will improve both functionality and safety long-term. However, as Gatz mentioned, the priority now is to "buy us some time to really start to put a plan together" while addressing immediate safety concerns.
Although much of the current work is taking place underneath the bridges, motorists will begin to notice more construction-related disruptions in the months ahead. Starting in March, ODOT will move on to the next phase, which will involve lane closures and other traffic management efforts. “During the night, we’re gonna have some lane closures, that’s primarily going to be from 8 p.m. in the evening to 6 a.m. and that’ll be Monday through Friday. So, we’ll try to get everything opened back up to the extent that we can through the really major daytime rush,” Gatz explained.
Project Timeline and Expected Impacts
While the project is expected to stretch out for years, there are key milestones for commuters to keep in mind. The initial phase of construction, focused on preparing the site and ensuring that safety measures are in place, should be completed by fall 2025. This work will help address immediate concerns related to bridge safety and reduce the risk of accidents in the interim. However, the major bridge replacements and interchange redesign won’t occur until later in the decade, with the final project completion expected around 2031.
As part of the plan, new bridges and updated interchanges will provide more efficient traffic flow and improved safety, especially for the growing number of vehicles using these highways daily. In the meantime, travelers should expect continued construction activities, lane shifts, and temporary delays as work progresses.
ODOT urges all commuters to plan accordingly, especially when traveling through the Amarillo Junction area. Drivers can expect some inconvenience, but officials are working to minimize disruptions, especially during the busy morning and evening rush hours. For those seeking to avoid delays, alternative routes may be an option, though congestion is anticipated in key areas affected by the ongoing project.
As work continues to upgrade the infrastructure, ODOT remains committed to improving the overall driving experience for Oklahoma residents, with safety being a top priority. The project is an important step in ensuring the highways are well-equipped to serve the region’s growing population and increasing traffic demands in the years to come.
For now, commuters are advised to stay informed about the project’s progress and to be patient as construction crews continue their important work on the bridges.
