
Advanced energy and high-energy-density research facilities are creating new requirements for specialized buildings, manufacturing infrastructure and technical project delivery. Pacific Fusion has begun construction of a Research and Manufacturing Campus in Albuquerque, New Mexico, alongside a new federal collaboration framework with the National Nuclear Security Administration.
The new campus will house Pacific Fusion’s Demonstration System, which is intended to support high-energy-density and inertial fusion experiments. The facility is being developed as a high-yield, high-gain fusion demonstration system.
The Albuquerque development combines research and manufacturing functions, requiring infrastructure capable of supporting advanced experimental equipment and related technical operations. The project represents an expansion of the physical infrastructure supporting private-sector fusion research in the United States.
NNSA and Pacific Fusion signed a memorandum of understanding Aug. 25 establishing a framework for cooperation involving high-yield fusion, high-energy-density science and related technical areas.
The agreement provides a basis for exploring joint activities between NNSA, Pacific Fusion and national laboratories. It does not itself establish specific projects or federal funding commitments. Those activities would be governed by separate agreements.
The collaboration is focused on areas where Pacific Fusion’s technology and NNSA capabilities may overlap, including fusion research and applications associated with national security and advanced experimental science.
The project adds to the infrastructure base supporting U.S. fusion and high-energy-density research. For construction owners and contractors, facilities in this sector can involve highly specialized building systems, research equipment integration and coordination between public-sector institutions and private technology developers.
The Albuquerque campus also illustrates the construction needs associated with emerging energy technologies, where research, manufacturing and demonstration functions may need to operate within a single development. Such projects require early coordination between technical requirements, facility design and specialized construction delivery.
