San Antonio’s South Side marked a major milestone in healthcare development with the topping out of the University Health Palo Alto Hospital. Led by Turner Construction Company in partnership with Byrne Construction Services and Straight Line Management, the event featured a beam-signing ceremony attended by University Health staff, project teams, and local leaders.

The five-story, $550 million hospital will bring essential medical services to one of the fastest-growing regions in the city. It will include an emergency department, labor and delivery suites, neonatal intensive care unit, operating rooms, inpatient beds, and an adjacent medical office building to support both emergency and long-term care.
“We’re building more than just hospitals—we’re building a healthier, stronger South Side,” said Ed Banos, CEO of University Health. “This project is rooted in our mission: expanding access to health care, developing a dynamic community hospital and supporting public health on the South Side. This isn’t just growth. It’s transformation—from the ground up, for all of us.”
“Reaching this milestone is a testament to the incredible collaboration between Turner, Byrne, Straight Line, and our many trade partners,” added Kyle Weller, Vice President and General Manager of Turner Construction Company. “Together, we are building a world-class health care facility that reflects the strength and spirit of this community. We are honored to play a role in bringing vital services closer to home for families in San Antonio’s South Side.”
The hospital and its accompanying medical office building are slated for completion in 2027.
