Payette, Idaho (CBS2) – October 18, 2025 – The Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) is advancing plans for a new State Highway 52 Snake River Bridge in Payette, emphasizing strategies to reduce disruption during construction. An in-person public meeting will be held Wednesday, October 22, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Payette City Hall Chambers, 700 Center Avenue. The meeting will adopt an open house format, allowing attendees to engage directly with ITD and Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) representatives. Residents will have the opportunity to ask questions, review detailed plans, and provide feedback on design, traffic management, and community safety measures.

For those who cannot attend in person, ITD has made an online participation option available from October 22 to November 5 at sh52snakeriverbridge.com, ensuring broader community involvement.

The new bridge, scheduled to begin construction in 2027, will replace the existing 72-year-old structure, which has surpassed its design life. The project is anticipated to take roughly two years to complete.

Significantly, ITD has revised its plans to keep the bridge open during construction, addressing public concerns from a 2023 meeting. Officials emphasized that maintaining traffic flow will help minimize impacts on local businesses, emergency services, and daily commutes.

“We’ve heard community feedback loud and clear,” said an ITD spokesperson. “Keeping the bridge operational during construction is a top priority, so residents can maintain mobility and businesses can continue to thrive without major interruptions.”

The new design is expected to enhance safety, accommodate larger vehicles, and improve resilience against flooding and environmental wear, while providing modern pedestrian and cyclist access along the corridor. The updated bridge is also being planned with a focus on long-term durability and reduced maintenance costs.

Local officials and residents have expressed support for the project’s thoughtful approach. Payette City Council member Laura Jensen commented, “This is a critical link for our community. ITD’s commitment to minimizing disruption shows they value both safety and the daily lives of our residents.”

ITD encourages the public to review project materials online and submit comments before the end of the participation window on November 5. These contributions will help shape the final construction approach, traffic management plans, and safety protocols.
