PCL Construction is advancing work on Amtrak’s new Trainset Maintenance and Inspection Facility at the King Street Coach Yard in Seattle, Washington, as the railroad prepares for its expanding fleet and new Airo trainsets. PCL’s latest project feature was published September 21, 2026.
The new facility is PCL’s fourth project at the King Street Coach Yard. It is being designed to centralize train inspection, cleaning, servicing and repair activities that were previously performed in different buildings across the campus. The facility will support Amtrak’s expanding fleet, including its new Airo trainsets.
The project includes maintenance and inspection tracks equipped with an overhead bridge crane, monorail crane, split-rail system and drop table. A source-capture diesel exhaust system will collect emissions directly from locomotives rather than requiring ventilation of the entire building.
Amtrak, PCL, TKDA and other project stakeholders are using a design-build approach to address technical and operational challenges. One notable change involved replacing a planned deep drop pit with a shallow drop table, reducing excavation requirements while supporting maintenance operations.
Construction is taking place in an active urban coach yard where trains can reach 500 feet in length and more than 200 daily train movements occur. PCL and Amtrak are coordinating track outages, deliveries, equipment movements and construction activities so rail operations can continue during the work.
The facility will add specialized maintenance capacity at Amtrak’s Seattle rail yard and support the railroad’s fleet modernization efforts in the Pacific Northwest. Amtrak previously announced that the overall King Street Yard modernization represents an investment of nearly $300 million, with completion expected in 2027.
