Coal City Community Unit School District #1 has reopened Coal City Intermediate School following the completion of a major restoration and renovation project designed to address structural issues while modernizing educational and athletic spaces. The work, delivered by design-build firm Performance Services, restored portions of the school affected by roof truss concerns and upgraded several key facilities.

The project allowed the district to return students and staff to improved learning environments after operating from alternate district facilities during the construction period.

Restoration and Facility Improvements

The renovation centered on repairing areas impacted by structural concerns within the school's roof truss system. Performance Services completed structural, masonry and mechanical improvements while reconstructing the gymnasium with new athletic flooring, LED lighting and updated basketball equipment.

The project also converted the former stage area into a first-floor band room equipped with acoustic ceiling treatments, upgraded ductwork and energy-efficient lighting. Additional building improvements were incorporated to enhance safety, functionality and long-term facility performance.

The school district officially marked the project's completion with a dedication ceremony and guided tours on Aug. 5.

Design-Build Delivery

Coal City Community Unit School District #1 selected Performance Services to manage the emergency repair and reconstruction effort using a design-build delivery approach. Throughout construction, students, faculty and staff were temporarily relocated to other district facilities to maintain instructional operations while work progressed.

The completed improvements restore critical educational and athletic spaces while providing updated infrastructure designed to support future school operations.

Why It Matters

School districts across the country continue to invest in facility modernization and structural rehabilitation to extend the service life of existing buildings while improving safety and energy performance. For construction owners and education facility managers, projects like Coal City Intermediate School demonstrate how design-build delivery can help accelerate emergency restoration work while minimizing disruptions to school operations.
