Pioneer Construction has completed the installation of a pedestrian sky bridge connecting Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital to the new Joan Secchia Children's Rehabilitation Hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan, marking a major milestone in the healthcare expansion project.
The bridge, erected by the company's self-perform steel team, will provide a direct connection between the existing rehabilitation hospital and the new pediatric rehabilitation facility, improving accessibility for patients, families, and healthcare staff.
The sky bridge incorporates approximately 135 tons of structural steel and required careful planning and coordination during installation.
The successful lift represents an important step toward completing the children's rehabilitation hospital, which is being developed through a partnership between Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital and Corewell Health Helen DeVos Children's Hospital.
The expansion is intended to increase pediatric rehabilitation capacity and enhance specialized care for children throughout West Michigan.
Pioneer Construction said the project reflects its continued involvement in complex healthcare construction projects requiring specialized structural expertise.
Once completed, the new children's rehabilitation hospital will expand access to rehabilitation services and provide integrated care for pediatric patients through its connection to the existing Mary Free Bed campus.
The sky bridge installation moves the children's rehabilitation hospital closer to completion while supporting expanded healthcare infrastructure in West Michigan. The project is expected to improve patient connectivity between facilities and strengthen access to specialized pediatric rehabilitation services across the region.
