Workplace cultural initiatives can provide construction and engineering organizations with opportunities to strengthen employee connections across departments and locations. Power Design marked Hispanic Heritage Month in October 2026 with a series of activities focused on cultural awareness and employee participation.
The electrical and multi-trade construction services provider organized activities at its St. Petersburg, Florida, campus and across its GRID, LINK and Field teams, as well as its Costa Rica office. Events included Spanish-language lessons for beginners, Spanish coffee discussions, Hispanic-inspired food offerings and a Havana-themed Zumba class. Spanish music also featured at the St. Petersburg campus.
The activities gave employees opportunities to engage with Hispanic cultures through language, food, music and shared experiences.
Power Design also invited employees to share how their cultural backgrounds influence their lives and identities. Contributions included perspectives from team members with roots in Costa Rica and Venezuela.
One employee, a switchboard designer working with Power Design Global, described the importance of family, community, resilience and hard work in Costa Rican culture. A design manager from Venezuela discussed the significance of being able to share cultural traditions, language and food in the workplace.
Another design manager highlighted the connections between cultural heritage, family, art, music and history.
The employee contributions added a personal dimension to the activities by placing staff experiences alongside the broader cultural programming.
For construction and engineering organizations with employees working across offices, design teams and field operations, workplace initiatives can create opportunities for interaction beyond day-to-day project responsibilities.
Power Design's activities extended across several organizational groups and its Costa Rica office, reflecting participation across different functions and locations. The program combined informal learning opportunities with employee-led cultural perspectives.
Why It Matters
Construction businesses depend on coordination among design professionals, field personnel and other operational teams. Activities that encourage employees to learn about colleagues' backgrounds can support workplace engagement across those groups. Power Design's Hispanic Heritage Month program illustrates one approach to bringing cultural learning and employee participation into a construction services organization's workplace activities.
