
Testing infrastructure for electric aviation is beginning to create a new category of specialized transportation construction. Prince Contracting is leading an expansion of Florida's SunTrax facility that will provide dedicated infrastructure for testing electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft and associated advanced air mobility systems.
The SunTrax expansion is designed to create a controlled environment for testing eVTOL aircraft and the infrastructure needed to support their operation.
Planned components include vertiports, aircraft charging and parking positions, taxiways, utilities, maintenance areas and research capabilities. Dedicated testing airspace will also be part of the expanded facility.
Prince Contracting, a FlatironDragados subsidiary, is leading the construction effort in partnership with Turner Construction Company and the Florida Department of Transportation.
The project is focused on testing aircraft and supporting systems before broader advanced air mobility networks are deployed. The infrastructure will allow testing to occur within a dedicated environment rather than relying on conventional transportation facilities.
Advanced air mobility facilities combine elements of aviation, transportation infrastructure and electrical systems. The SunTrax expansion therefore requires infrastructure capable of supporting aircraft operations as well as charging, maintenance, research and testing functions.
For construction teams, the project represents a specialized infrastructure program involving multiple systems within a controlled testing environment. Coordination among the state transportation agency, contractors and aviation stakeholders will be central to delivering the facility.
The SunTrax expansion extends transportation construction beyond conventional road and transit infrastructure by creating facilities for emerging electric aviation systems.
