Purdue University is expanding its educational offerings in construction technology with a new program based at its Indianapolis campus, the university announced on Jan. 30. Operated out of the Purdue Polytechnic Institute, the program is designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary for managing construction projects from initial budgeting to project completion.

Through its strategic location in Indianapolis, the program aims to strengthen connections between students and local industry leaders. The initiative will also be among the first of its kind to provide a registered apprenticeship in construction management, offering a unique combination of education and workforce training.

Bridging the Skilled Labor Gap

With a growing demand for skilled workers in the construction sector, Purdue’s new program seeks to address the industry's labor shortage by providing students with practical, hands-on learning experiences.

Students enrolled in the program will benefit from an "earn and learn" model, allowing them to receive wages while being mentored and trained as apprentices by Indiana-based companies. Additionally, Purdue is exploring the potential to introduce pre-apprenticeship programs in central Indiana high schools, helping to create pathways for advanced placement into the program.

“From listening to construction industry leaders throughout the city, we knew that there was an urgent need for skilled workers in this particular area,” said David Umulis, senior vice provost Purdue University for Indianapolis, in the release.

Purdue’s Continued Investment in Construction Technology

The university has been making significant strides in the construction technology sector. In April 2024, civil engineering professor Luna Lu was awarded a gold medal at the Edison Awards in the Best New Products competition under the critical human infrastructure category. That same month, Purdue also announced a groundbreaking collaboration with the Indiana Department of Transportation to create the world’s first contactless wireless-charging concrete highway segment.

Additionally, in March 2024, Purdue partnered with Trimble Technology Lab, a Westminster, Colorado-based construction technology giant, to introduce advanced training programs in architecture, engineering, and construction.

Launch Timeline and Future Prospects

The Indianapolis construction management technology program is set to officially relaunch in the fall of 2024, with current students transitioning into the new curriculum. The first full freshman class will be welcomed in the 2026-27 academic year.

With a combination of apprenticeships, industry collaborations, and state-of-the-art technology, Purdue’s latest initiative is poised to play a pivotal role in shaping the next generation of construction professionals.
