Data center development is increasingly tied to local water availability, making infrastructure and conservation investments a growing consideration for large-scale digital facilities. QTS has announced plans to commit $1 billion globally toward water infrastructure improvements, conservation efforts and watershed restoration as the data center operator works toward becoming water positive by 2035.
The initiative combines efforts to reduce water consumption at QTS facilities with investments intended to improve water reliability in communities and watersheds where the company operates.
QTS plans to address water stewardship through three primary areas: reducing operational demand, reusing water where feasible and supporting projects that replenish or protect local water resources.
The company has used its Water-Free Cooling Design since 2019. The closed-loop approach is designed to avoid the ongoing water consumption associated with traditional evaporative cooling systems and is planned for continued use in new developments.
For data center owners and developers, cooling-system selection can influence both facility water demand and local infrastructure requirements. QTS’s approach places water efficiency alongside other infrastructure considerations as the company expands its data center footprint.
Texas is the first major market identified under the broader commitment. QTS plans to direct $250 million toward water infrastructure, conservation and community-focused projects across the state over the next decade.
One project involves replacing an aging water tower in Turkey, Texas. QTS also plans to invest $15 million over the same period with Bonneville Environmental Foundation on conservation and water replenishment initiatives. Planned work includes leak detection, habitat restoration and improvements to irrigation efficiency.
QTS said future projects will be tailored to local watershed conditions and developed with community participation. The company also plans to use independent verification and public reporting to measure project results.
Water availability is becoming an important infrastructure consideration for data center development, particularly in regions experiencing population growth, industrial expansion or water-resource constraints.
QTS’s commitment links new data center capacity with investments in local water systems and conservation. For developers, owners and contractors involved in digital infrastructure, the initiative highlights how water management can become part of broader site planning, facility design and community infrastructure strategies.
The company plans to announce additional projects and partnerships as the initiative progresses toward its 2035 water-positive target.
