Structural work has reached a major milestone on a new cancer treatment and research facility in Roanoke, Virginia, as Robins & Morton Branch Builds marked the topping out of the Carilion Taubman Cancer Center.

The six-story, nearly 257,000-square-foot facility is being developed on Carilion Clinic’s Riverside Campus, where it will serve as a consolidated location for cancer treatment, clinical trials, research and related patient services.

Six-Story Facility Expands Cancer Care Capacity

The new cancer center is designed to accommodate more patients than Carilion Clinic’s existing cancer facility. The building will bring multiple cancer-care functions together, including personalized treatment, advanced technology, clinical trials and research.

The facility is also being designed around patient experience, with natural light, outdoor spaces and expanded amenities incorporated into the building program.

Carilion Clinic serves nearly 1 million patients annually across Western Virginia. The Riverside Campus is also home to Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine and the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at VTC, creating a healthcare, medical education and research environment around the project.

Topping Out Advances Project Toward 2027 Completion

The topping-out ceremony marks completion of the building’s primary structural frame and allows construction activities to advance into subsequent phases of the project.

Robins & Morton Branch Builds, a joint venture between Robins & Morton and Branch Builds, is serving as general contractor. HDR is the architect.

With structural construction substantially advanced, remaining work will include building systems, interior construction, finishes, specialized healthcare infrastructure and commissioning before the facility opens.

The project is scheduled for completion in late 2027.

Why It Matters

The Carilion Taubman Cancer Center represents a significant healthcare construction project in Western Virginia, combining patient care, research and clinical trial functions within a nearly 257,000-square-foot facility.

For healthcare owners and contractors, the project also illustrates the scale and coordination required to develop specialized medical facilities that combine advanced treatment environments with research and patient-support spaces.
