SC State Traffic Rerouted for New Academic Building Construction

Caroline Raffetto

ORANGEBURG, S.C. — South Carolina State University is entering the final stages of construction on its newest academic building, a centerpiece project at the heart of the Orangeburg campus. To complete critical utility connections, a temporary traffic reroute will be in effect from Wednesday, September 10 through Friday, September 12.

According to university officials, Gaethers Street will close from the fork at the Thelma Howard Williams Rose Garden to Lance Street beginning at 4 p.m. on September 10. During the closure, two-way traffic will be redirected along Naylor Street, with access provided through Pinckney, Rucker, and Lance streets. Importantly, Gaethers will remain open between Lance and Buckley streets for local access.

Ken Davis, SC State’s Associate Vice President for Facilities Management, Planning and Construction, said crews are working quickly to minimize disruptions. “We expect the work to be completed by 5 p.m. September 12,” Davis confirmed.

The temporary road closure allows crews to perform utility tie-ins — essential underground work to connect the new academic facility to campuswide systems. These include water, electricity, communications, and other vital infrastructure needed to bring the building online.

The academic building, which sits prominently at the center of campus, is part of SC State’s ongoing capital improvement plan aimed at modernizing facilities and enhancing the student experience. The project reflects the university’s continued investment in state-of-the-art learning environments, designed to support both instruction and research.

Campus officials are encouraging drivers to plan ahead, allow extra time when traveling through the area, and remain alert to workers and signage. University leaders also expressed appreciation to students, faculty, and community members for their patience during the final phase of construction.

Once complete, the building is expected to become a hub for academic innovation and student engagement, strengthening SC State’s role as a leading HBCU in South Carolina.
