Selma Construction Company Leads Redevelopment of Once-Empty Shopping Plaza

A once-abandoned strip mall in Selma is getting a new lease on life thanks to Steward Construction Company, which is steadily redeveloping the site into a thriving business destination.

The property, long empty and underutilized, sits on one of the city’s busiest streets. Now, it’s beginning to fill with new tenants and activity. Steward Construction first built a Climate Control Storage facility, which helped anchor the redevelopment. Soon, an Army Recruiting Center and Labcorp will also move in, signaling fresh economic energy for the area.

“We’ve got a great parking space area. We are looking into maybe putting in a restaurant out in the parking lot,” said Steward Construction Company CFO Davis Jones. “We’ve also had some interest of building out a restaurant here in the building itself.”

Jones said that the company is also developing commercial office space within the plaza, providing opportunities for professional services and small businesses to set up shop locally.

Community leaders say the project represents more than just new businesses. The plaza sits in an area of Selma that was heavily damaged by a tornado in 2023, and its revival is being seen as a symbol of resilience and forward momentum for the city.

The combination of retail, office, storage, and potential restaurant space makes the redevelopment one of the more versatile projects underway in Selma. With ample parking and high visibility, the plaza has the potential to draw both local residents and commuters, giving a major boost to surrounding businesses.

For Steward Construction, the project is both a business venture and a way to invest in the community’s future. “We want this to be a space where people gather, where businesses thrive, and where Selma continues to grow stronger,” Jones said.

The company plans to continue exploring partnerships with prospective tenants and is leaving space open for additional commercial and service-based businesses as demand grows.
