
For mining projects in challenging terrain, haul-road and drainage infrastructure are critical to maintaining long-term site access and operational continuity. Shimmick is progressing work on the Husky 1 Haul Road Phase II project for Itafos Conda in Soda Springs, Idaho, with construction focused on earthwork, drainage and environmental controls supporting the H1/NDR Mine.
The project includes construction of the mine's main haul road along with drainage infrastructure and a major culvert crossing. The scope also covers clearing and grubbing, topsoil management and balanced cut-and-fill operations.
The terrain requires drilling and blasting as part of the earthwork program. Shimmick is also constructing ponds and installing erosion and sediment control measures to address environmental requirements during construction.
The work is being carried out under mine safety and environmental requirements, with construction activities sequenced around the site's steep slopes and field conditions.
Construction started in April 2026, and crews are continuing work on the haul road, drainage improvements and associated earthwork.
Shimmick is self-performing key portions of the work, including earthwork, drainage and haul-road construction. The approach allows the project team to coordinate excavation, material movement, drainage installation and road development as construction advances.
The infrastructure is intended to provide improved access to the H1/NDR Mine and support its ongoing operations.
The Husky 1 project illustrates the construction requirements associated with heavy civil work in active mining environments, where access infrastructure must be developed alongside environmental controls and demanding terrain.
