Hands-on field experience remains an essential component of workforce development as contractors prepare future construction professionals for project delivery. Shimmick recently hosted its annual Intern Rodeo, providing interns with practical exposure to heavy equipment, field operations and construction safety.
The event took place at Shimmick's equipment yard in Tracy, California, where 28 interns participated alongside operators, mechanics, mentors, company leaders and vendor partners.
Following a safety briefing, interns rotated through multiple training stations featuring cranes, excavators, forklifts, stick welding and other construction equipment. Activities included equipment demonstrations, timed challenges and practical exercises designed to familiarize participants with field operations.
The program is intended to help students pursuing engineering, construction management and field operations better understand equipment operation, maintenance practices and the coordination required on active construction projects.
The Intern Rodeo concluded with an awards presentation recognizing participant performance, followed by networking opportunities that brought interns together with company leadership and experienced field personnel.
Vendor partners, including ISCO Industries, J.S. Cole Company, Reeve Trucking, Herc Rentals and Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers, supported the event through donated prizes and giveaways.
The annual program has been conducted for more than 15 years as part of Shimmick's broader internship and workforce development efforts.
