
A major bridge replacement project in El Dorado County is approaching its final construction phase, with the new Mosquito Bridge expected to open to traffic later this month. The project is designed to improve transportation reliability, emergency response access and evacuation options for communities separated by the American River Canyon.
Shimmick has spent more than four years constructing the new bridge, replacing an existing one-lane suspension bridge that is more than a century old and has limited access for larger vehicles and emergency responders.
The Mosquito Bridge will establish a more reliable connection between Placerville and Swansboro. Its location approximately 400 feet above the American River required crews to work across rugged and difficult terrain.
Construction progressed from both sides of the canyon, with crews advancing the structure until the spans were connected in the center. The remote project location also required specialized access systems to reach construction areas.
Shimmick established a dedicated concrete batch plant at the site to produce the concrete required for the bridge, reducing the logistical challenges associated with transporting materials into the remote work area.
The project has entered its final stages, with crews completing bridge joint seals, architectural finishes and restoration activities around the project site.
Recent milestones include the completion of the final concrete barrier placements and installation of the bridge deck's polymer concrete overlay.
Traffic is expected to transition onto the new bridge later in September, followed by a ribbon-cutting ceremony later in the month. Once operational, the structure will provide improved access for residents, emergency responders and larger vehicles serving the surrounding communities.
Replacing the aging one-lane suspension bridge is expected to improve transportation resilience and emergency access in a geographically challenging area of El Dorado County. The new connection also provides an additional evacuation route for surrounding communities.
For infrastructure owners and contractors, the project illustrates the construction challenges associated with major bridge work in remote terrain, including specialized access, on-site material production and coordination across difficult work environments.
