University athletics projects require specialised indoor facilities, equipment areas and supporting spaces to accommodate multiple sports programs. A newly completed 52,000-square-foot training centre at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) adds dedicated practice and athlete-support infrastructure to the university’s main campus.
Skanska completed the $35 million Basketball and Volleyball Training Center adjacent to UTSA’s Roadrunner Athletics Center of Excellence in San Antonio. The two-story facility serves the university’s men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball programs.
The project expands the university’s dedicated athletics facilities while consolidating training, team operations and athlete-support functions within one building.
The centre contains two full-sized National Collegiate Athletic Association practice courts, locker rooms with showers, video review rooms, team lounges, coaches’ offices and meeting areas.
Additional amenities include a weight room, hydrotherapy and sports medicine spaces, equipment storage and laundry facilities. The combination of training and support areas provides dedicated space for daily team activities.
Construction began in December 2024, with Populous serving as the project designer. Building work took place on an active university campus next to existing athletic facilities, requiring coordination around campus access and ongoing university operations.
The project team had to manage construction activities alongside the daily use of nearby facilities, with the work planned to minimise disruption to students, athletes and university operations.
UTSA, the City of San Antonio and Bexar County contributed to the funding effort supporting the facility. The $35 million project represents a public and institutional investment in campus athletics infrastructure.
For construction stakeholders, the development demonstrates the coordination involved in delivering specialised facilities within operating institutional campuses. Projects of this type combine athletic building requirements with locker rooms, medical support areas, training equipment and team administration spaces.
The completed centre adds dedicated capacity for UTSA’s basketball and volleyball programs while providing a new athletics facility within the university’s existing campus infrastructure.
