Transportation infrastructure projects that combine roadway capacity, bridge replacement, drainage and multimodal improvements can require significant coordination across traffic, flood protection and construction activities. Skanska has been selected for a $57 million corridor improvement project in the Del Mar area that will address several of those needs along El Camino Real.
The project will widen El Camino Real to four lanes and replace the existing San Dieguito River Bridge, which is 84 years old.
The work also includes drainage improvements intended to reduce flooding risks and riverbank stabilization measures designed to protect the roadway from erosion along the San Dieguito River.
Multimodal improvements will include separated bicycle lanes, new sidewalks and upgraded traffic signals. An equestrian-friendly trail beneath the replacement bridge will connect with the planned Coast to Crest Trail.
The completed improvements are intended to strengthen transportation connections between Del Mar, Solana Beach and nearby communities while addressing existing roadway and drainage conditions.
Skanska is scheduled to begin construction in December 2026, with completion expected in August 2030.
The project will require construction activities within a heavily traveled transportation corridor while the bridge, roadway, drainage and multimodal improvements are delivered. The scope gives the project a combination of transportation, bridge and water-management components within a single construction program.
For transportation owners and contractors, the project illustrates how roadway programs increasingly combine capacity improvements with bridge rehabilitation, flood mitigation and multimodal infrastructure.
The $57 million award also adds to the San Diego region's ongoing investment in transportation infrastructure, with the project addressing both existing mobility needs and infrastructure resilience along the San Dieguito River corridor.
