The loss of a longtime trade association executive highlights the leadership contributions that have shaped California’s sheet metal and air conditioning sector over several decades. Cyndi Marshall, former executive vice president of CAL SMACNA, died Aug. 26, 2026, following a 30-year career supporting contractors, businesses and industry organizations.
Marshall began her association career in 1986 as membership director for Sacramento and Central Valley SMACNA. Three years later, she joined CAL SMACNA as director of operations and subsequently served as interim general manager.
In 1998, Marshall became executive vice president of CAL SMACNA. Her appointment made her the first woman in the country to lead a statewide SMACNA chapter in that capacity.
She remained in the position for 18 years, overseeing association operations and developing services for contractors and businesses across California’s sheet metal and air conditioning industry.
During her tenure, CAL SMACNA expanded its membership services, added recognition programs and associate membership categories, and updated its convention activities. The association also received national recognition as the only statewide SMACNA chapter designated a “Multi-Service” chapter.
Marshall’s career spanned major changes in the construction and mechanical contracting sectors. Her association work focused on supporting businesses and industry participants through organizational programs and member services.
Her 1998 appointment also represented a milestone for women in construction trade association leadership, placing a woman at the head of a statewide SMACNA chapter for the first time.
Trade associations provide contractors with resources covering business operations, technical standards, education, workforce development and industry advocacy. Leadership at organizations serving specialty contractors can therefore influence how members access those resources and engage with broader construction issues.
Marshall’s more than three decades of service at Sacramento and Central Valley SMACNA and CAL SMACNA represent a significant period in the development of organized support for California’s sheet metal and air conditioning contractors.
