Mental health and suicide prevention remain important workforce issues for construction employers, where contractors and owners are increasingly focused on worker safety and overall well-being. SMACNA is supporting a September virtual 5K organized by CIASP to raise awareness and fund resources addressing these issues.

Virtual 5K Runs Throughout September

The Miles That Matter Virtual 5K gives construction industry participants flexibility to complete the 3.107-mile distance at any point during September. Participants can choose among running, walking, biking or swimming as their preferred activity.

Because the event is virtual, participation does not depend on a single physical race location. Participants can complete the distance in their own communities and share photos, videos and results.

Support for Construction Mental Health

Registration supports CIASP’s work providing resources related to suicide prevention, mental wellness and safety across the construction industry.

SMACNA’s sponsorship connects the association’s member network with an industrywide initiative focused on addressing mental health and suicide prevention alongside traditional workplace safety concerns.

Why It Matters

For construction owners and contractors, workforce well-being is increasingly connected to broader safety and workforce-management practices. Programs that raise awareness of mental health and suicide prevention provide employers and workers with additional resources beyond physical jobsite safety.

The virtual format also allows construction professionals across different locations to participate without traveling to a centralized event, creating a low-barrier opportunity for industry involvement.
