Spanish Moss Trail Extension Work Begins

PORT ROYAL, S.C. — The highly anticipated extension of the Spanish Moss Trail is officially in motion, marking the next phase of development for Beaufort County’s most popular greenway.

Construction began on September 8, with most work occurring during daylight hours. However, roadwork along Ribaut Road is being performed overnight from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. in order to minimize traffic congestion for daily commuters.

The South Carolina Department of Transportation announced that residents should prepare for shoulder closures along Ribaut Road, between Rahn Lane and Drayton Drive, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Officials cautioned that while traffic will be maintained, drivers should expect some delays. As the SCDOT noted, “minor delays” are expected throughout the week while crews complete the initial stages of work.

The six-month project will not only extend the trail but also significantly improve pedestrian safety. A pedestrian-activated traffic signal will be installed at key crossings, allowing walkers and cyclists to safely navigate busy sections of Ribaut Road. Once completed, the extension will run from Port Royal’s Ribaut Road to Appleton Road, expanding access for surrounding neighborhoods.

Community Benefits and Long-Term Impact

The Spanish Moss Trail has become a centerpiece of outdoor recreation in Beaufort County, drawing runners, cyclists, families, and visitors to its scenic route. Extending the trail further into Port Royal is expected to boost tourism, enhance property values, and create stronger links between local businesses and neighborhoods.

Local leaders have emphasized that this project is about more than construction—it’s about building safer, healthier, and more connected communities. The additional trail segment will provide residents with a car-free transportation option, encouraging active lifestyles and reducing short vehicle trips.

Trail advocates also see this as part of a larger vision. The Spanish Moss Trail is part of the East Coast Greenway, a 3,000-mile network of trails stretching from Maine to Florida. Each local extension helps bring the long-term vision of a continuous, safe, and accessible trail system closer to reality.

Next Steps

Construction crews will continue working through the fall and winter months, with completion targeted for early spring. Once finished, Beaufort County officials plan to evaluate additional connections and safety enhancements for future phases.

For now, residents are encouraged to use caution when traveling along Ribaut Road, watch for detour signage, and allow extra travel time when crews are active. Updates on the project’s progress will be available through local news outlets and official advisories.
