Construction Begins on New Staunton High School to Replace Aging Facility

Construction is officially underway on a new high school in Staunton, Illinois, as district officials move forward with a phased plan to replace the community’s aging high school building.

The Staunton School District is demolishing the existing high school and building a modern, expanded educational facility in its place. The project includes a new classroom wing, a 500-seat auxiliary gymnasium, and additional renovations throughout the campus.

“It was time for some upgrades,” said Staunton Superintendent Brett Allen. “The cost of repairing features of the building became really costly.”

The work is being completed in three phases. Phase 1 involves construction of a two-story building with 20 new classrooms featuring enhanced space and improved technology. That portion is expected to be finished by spring 2026.

Phase 2 will see students relocated from the current high school into the new facility. After the transition, the existing three-story structure will be abated for environmental hazards and demolished.

Phase 3 will deliver a new auxiliary gym with seating for 500, along with upgraded locker rooms and a stage for performing arts events.

The design is by FGM Architects, with Poettker Construction managing the build.

Modern Learning Environments and Safety Upgrades

The new high school is designed to support 21st-century education with technology-ready classrooms and improved layouts that promote collaborative learning. Larger classrooms and updated infrastructure will allow teachers to better integrate digital tools and accommodate future needs.

Community Investment in Education

The replacement of Staunton High represents a long-term investment in local education and student success. With growing maintenance costs at the current facility and concerns over outdated systems, district leaders say the rebuild is a proactive step toward a more sustainable future.

Arts and Athletics Revitalized

The performing arts stage and auxiliary gym will provide enhanced space for both student performances and athletic programs, expanding extracurricular opportunities and serving as community hubs for events and gatherings.

Construction Timeline and Next Steps

Following the completion of the new classroom wing in 2026, demolition of the current school will begin immediately. Environmental remediation will ensure the site is cleared safely before the final gymnasium phase begins.

Once completed, the new Staunton High School will offer upgraded amenities, improved safety, and a learning environment designed to serve students for generations to come.
