Steelhead Expands Salem Facility, Boosts Fabrication Capacity

Caroline Raffetto

SALEM, Ore. — Steelhead Metal & Fab LLC (Steelhead) is scaling up its operations with the construction of a new fabrication facility at its Salem campus, part of a broader strategy to increase production capacity and enhance its industry-leading capabilities.

The new 7,200-square-foot building will be equipped with cutting-edge plasma cutting technology and a 10-ton overhead crane, adding both precision and lifting power to Steelhead’s operations. Once complete, it will be the fifth structure on the company’s campus, bringing Steelhead’s total production and administration footprint to more than 40,000 square feet.

“Our new production facility, and the addition of industry leading tools and talent will greatly increase our capacity and significantly shorten lead times,” said Mike Kreitzberg, Steelhead’s owner. “Over 26 years of operation, we’ve consistently demonstrated that we’re at our best when taking on large, complex, one-off projects that require exacting fabrication, proactive communication and mastery of logistics. These strategic additions will yield greater efficiency to our industry leading steel fabrication capabilities.”

Strategic Growth Beyond the Building

Steelhead isn’t just expanding its physical space. The company also announced two strategic moves designed to strengthen its design and detailing operations.

Steel design veteran Pedro Rodriguez has joined the firm to lead the steel design and detailing team. With decades of experience, Rodriguez brings both proven leadership and fluency in Tekla Structures software, a specialized platform for 3D modeling and detailing of steel structures. This addition integrates seamlessly with Steelhead’s existing suite of CAD tools, enabling smoother project workflows from concept to fabrication.

These strategic upgrades—physical, technical, and human—are expected to help Steelhead handle larger projects with tighter timelines while continuing to deliver the customization and craftsmanship that have defined its reputation.

Driving Growth in Oregon’s Manufacturing Sector

Steelhead’s investment comes at a time when demand for precision fabrication and custom steel structures is rising in construction, energy, and infrastructure projects across the Pacific Northwest. The Salem expansion positions the company to take on more complex assignments while providing faster turnaround for existing customers.

With its expanded campus, upgraded equipment, and new leadership talent, Steelhead is signaling its intent to remain a key player in the Oregon steel fabrication industry for decades to come.
