Sturgeon Electric California completed a major emergency restoration effort in the Imperial and Coachella valleys after severe storms caused extensive damage to electrical infrastructure in Southern California.

The electrical contractor was called by the Imperial Irrigation District (IID) following storms Lorena and Mario, which brought torrential rain and winds reaching 75 mph to the region in August 2025. The weather event disrupted service for approximately 8,000 IID customers and damaged power poles and lines.

Sturgeon California mobilized crews within hours of receiving the request for assistance, beginning a restoration effort that continued for nearly two months.

Crews Reconstruct 150 Transmission Poles

The restoration work required crews to operate under difficult weather conditions while repairing damaged electrical infrastructure. Field teams worked 16-hour shifts, seven days a week, for six consecutive weeks as they reconstructed 150 transmission poles.

The work focused not only on restoring electricity but also on rebuilding infrastructure to support long-term reliability. Crews paid particular attention to pole alignment and installation to reduce structural strain on the repaired transmission system.

The response also led to additional work from IID as the utility and contractor developed a stronger working relationship during the restoration effort.

Coordination between Sturgeon California and IID allowed changes to the work plan to be addressed quickly as conditions evolved. The teams maintained regular communication throughout the project.

Safety Remains Central During Emergency Response

The restoration effort required extensive coordination among field crews, management, supervision and safety personnel. An operations manager, superintendent, general foreman and five crews worked on site, supported by a 24/7 safety manager.

Wind, heavy rainfall and long working hours created additional hazards. Crews used Stop Work Authority when conditions required activities to be paused or priorities to be changed.

Instead of continuing potentially hazardous aerial work during difficult conditions, crews shifted to tasks such as framing poles on the ground, preparing work areas and staging materials. This approach allowed productivity to continue while maintaining safety controls.

Back-office teams also supported the crews with accommodations, meals and rest arrangements intended to help workers maintain their physical and mental readiness.

The project ultimately recorded a perfect safety record.

Restoration Supports Regional Reliability

The emergency response provided a critical service to communities across the Imperial and Coachella valleys, where residents and businesses depended on the damaged electrical infrastructure.

The project also demonstrated the importance of rapid contractor mobilization, utility coordination and safety-focused field management during major storm restoration operations.
