A key vehicle procurement decision is moving Austin's first light rail system closer to construction and implementation, with the Austin Transit Partnership approving a manufacturer for the planned fleet. STV is supporting the procurement and coordinating vehicle requirements with major components of the transit system.
The Austin Transit Partnership selected Stadler as the preferred light rail vehicle manufacturer following a competitive procurement process. The decision allows preliminary vehicle design and coordination work to proceed while broader system development continues.
STV is serving as vehicle project manager as part of the delivery partner team. Its responsibilities include supporting procurement activities and coordinating the future vehicles with track, traction power, signaling, station platforms and maintenance facilities.
Over the past 18 months, STV has supported procurement document development, proposal evaluations, manufacturer site visits and coordination among ATP, the vehicle manufacturer and design teams.
The planned all-electric system will span approximately 10 miles and include 15 stations. The route is intended to connect employment centers, educational institutions and major destinations across Austin.
The vehicles are being planned with features including level boarding, multiple doors and flexible areas for bicycles, luggage and strollers. Each vehicle is expected to carry approximately 240 passengers. Community input will be incorporated into selected vehicle design elements.
ATP previously selected progressive design-build contractors for the broader light rail system and its operations and maintenance facility. The vehicle procurement represents another major component of the program's foundational delivery package.
Coordinating vehicle specifications with track, power, signaling, stations and maintenance infrastructure is a critical element of large transit programs. For owners and delivery teams, the Austin project demonstrates how early vehicle procurement can establish interface requirements before major system components advance further into construction and implementation.
