Excavation has begun on a new rail tunnel between New Jersey and New York following the launch of the first tunnel boring machine for the Hudson Tunnel Project, advancing a major component of the Gateway Program along the Northeast Corridor.
The tunnel boring machine is designed to excavate the first mile of the tunnel alignment while installing precast concrete lining rings as excavation progresses. The machine will create an approximately 25-foot-diameter tunnel tube and place six-foot-wide precast concrete segments behind the excavation face.
The work marks the transition into a major underground construction phase for the Hudson Tunnel Project, which is intended to expand rail capacity and improve service reliability on one of the most heavily used passenger rail corridors in the United States.
STV is serving as lead engineering firm and engineer-of-record for the project's final design through a joint venture. The company is working with the Gateway Development Commission and other project partners as construction advances.
The Hudson Tunnel Project forms part of the broader Gateway Program, which includes infrastructure investments aimed at strengthening rail service through the New York and New Jersey region.
The project supports a rail network that carries significant economic activity across the Northeast. Project information estimates that construction is generating more than 95,000 direct, indirect and induced jobs and approximately $19.6 billion in economic activity.
For transportation owners, contractors and engineering providers, the TBM launch represents a key construction milestone on a large-scale rail infrastructure program. The excavation and sequential installation of tunnel lining demonstrate the specialized engineering and construction coordination required to deliver new capacity within an active regional transportation network.
