Houston Terminal B Expansion Adds Gates and Passenger Capacity

Airport modernisation projects are expanding terminal capacity while addressing the operational demands of major transportation hubs. STV has completed delivery of the redevelopment programme at United Airlines’ Terminal B at George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston, marking a significant investment in the airport’s infrastructure and the airline’s regional operations.

The $2.55 billion programme includes the opening of the new Terminal B North Concourse and adds 765,000 square feet of facilities. The redevelopment introduces 22 gates designed to accommodate both narrow-body and wide-body aircraft, increasing the terminal’s ability to support passenger traffic and airline operations.

STV partnered with AvAirPros to lead programme delivery for United Airlines and the Houston Airport System. Construction and modernisation work was carried out while the airport remained operational, requiring coordination among airport stakeholders, project teams and airline operations.

Programme Management and Terminal Upgrades

STV provided programme management services covering strategic planning, scheduling, project controls, community engagement, risk management, cost management and change management. The scope also included oversight of art curation for the redeveloped terminal.

Passenger-facing improvements include expanded retail offerings, upgraded baggage operations and a 54,000-square-foot United Club. The new lounge is the largest in United Airlines’ global network, according to STV.

The redevelopment also incorporates technology upgrades intended to support future airport operations. Together, the additional gates, expanded facilities and operational improvements are designed to accommodate long-term growth at United Airlines’ Houston hub.

Airport Modernisation While Operations Continue

The programme began in 2024 and was delivered under budget, STV reported. Maintaining airport operations during construction added coordination requirements for the delivery team, particularly across passenger circulation, aircraft access and existing terminal functions.

The project adds to STV’s aviation portfolio, which includes work at Newark Liberty International Airport, Los Angeles International Airport, Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, LaGuardia Airport and John F. Kennedy International Airport.

Why It Matters for Airport Owners and Contractors

The Terminal B redevelopment demonstrates the scale and coordination involved in modernising major airport facilities without suspending ongoing operations. For airport owners and programme managers, the project highlights the importance of integrated scheduling, cost controls, risk management and stakeholder coordination across complex aviation construction programmes.

The additional gates and terminal space also provide United Airlines and the Houston Airport System with expanded infrastructure to support future passenger and operational requirements.
